Beth Southorn Represents LifeSTEPS at the 2025 Affordable Housing Symposium in Washington, D.C.
On June 4–5, 2025, LifeSTEPS Executive Director Beth Southorn joined housing leaders and advocates from across the country in Washington, D.C., for the Affordable Housing Symposium, co-hosted by the Affordable Housing Tax Credit Coalition (AHTCC) and the Housing Advisory Group.
The two-day event brought together Members of Congress, industry experts, and housing professionals to focus on one of the nation’s most critical issues: expanding and strengthening access to affordable housing through the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program.
Attendees heard impactful remarks from key policymakers, including Senators Todd Young (R-IN) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA), and Representatives Darin LaHood (R-IL), Mike Carey (R-OH), Randy Feenstra (R-IA), Suzan DelBene (D-WA), and Chair of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Housing and Insurance Rep. Mike Flood (R-NE). Congressional staff from essential House and Senate committees also provided legislative updates and insight into the 2025 tax reconciliation process.
Beth engaged in meaningful dialogue with national leaders, advocating for stronger investment in affordable housing solutions that empower families and communities—something LifeSTEPS has championed for over 30 years. Speaking on the value of LIHTC and workforce housing, she shared:
“Thanking all Republican Sponsors for the LIHTC win in the big beautiful bill. LIHTC funds work! With housing, there are workers living and thriving. Rural or urban… housing has to grow for the workforce.”
In addition to the symposium, Beth participated in a high-level networking reception with Members of Congress and staff, followed the next day by direct congressional meetings across 33 offices, representing 65 advocates in support of the Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act (AHCIA) of 2025.
Beth’s presence at the symposium underscores LifeSTEPS’ ongoing commitment to advocating for effective policy that not only builds affordable housing but also supports the people who call it home. As we continue working alongside partners across California and beyond, we remain dedicated to ensuring that every resident has the opportunity to thrive.
