LifeSTEPS Awards $116,450 in Academic Scholarships to 29 Students for Fall 2024
August 1st, 2024 – Sacramento, CA: LifeSTEPS is proud to announce the distribution of $116,450 in academic scholarships awarded to 29 low-income students residing in affordable housing for the Fall 2024 semester. These scholarships, provided through the JB Brown Fund and the Patrick R. Sabelhaus Fund, reflect our ongoing commitment to supporting educational advancement and breaking the cycle of poverty.
The JB Brown Fund, established in 2011 in partnership with USA Properties, awarded 24 scholarships this year. This fund has a longstanding tradition of empowering students to pursue their academic goals, helping them build brighter futures through higher education.
The Patrick R. Sabelhaus Fund, created in 2023 in honor of Patrick R. Sabelhaus, marks its second scholarship cycle this year. This fund awarded scholarships to 5 deserving students, continuing Patrick’s legacy of dedication to community service and educational support.
“We are thrilled to support these exceptional students as they embark on their educational journeys,” said Beth Southorn, Executive Director of LifeSTEPS. “These scholarships not only alleviate the financial burden of tuition but also inspire and encourage our youth to strive for excellence. We are grateful to our partners and donors who make these opportunities possible.”
Among the recipients is Brandon P., a JB Brown Scholarship applicant. Brandon will be transferring from Los Rios Community College in Sacramento to attend UC Berkeley as a junior this fall, studying global studies. Growing up at Terracina Gold Apartments in Sacramento with his single mother, Brandon is a first-generation college student and the first in his family to attend college.
Brandon expressed his gratitude: “This scholarship is a perfect opportunity because it allows me to acquire specific skills and relevant knowledge in my field of interest, global studies. My long-term goal is to become an expert in international affairs, and this scholarship will allow me to advance in my studies and the possibility of becoming a professional in global affairs. In addition, I plan to continue supporting my community through volunteer work, raising awareness among young students and children about vital issues like taking care of our environment and our city, thus contributing to a better society.”
Over the past four years, Brandon has volunteered at community outreach events with The Hispanic Resource Council of Northern California (HRCNC), Councilmember District Six Eric Guerra, Councilwoman District One Angelique Ashby, the Consulate General of Mexico in Sacramento, the City of Sacramento, and other organizations. His projects on Creativity, Activity, and Service have involved various cultural events and activities, highlighting the diverse Latino culture. Brandon’s dedication and hard work have resulted in a high GPA of 3.77.
LifeSTEPS remains committed to providing vital resources and support to residents of affordable housing. Through our scholarship programs, we aim to foster a culture of learning and opportunity, ensuring that all students have the chance to succeed academically and beyond.
