Recognizing National Nutrition Month & Our Donors

March is National Nutrition Month, and LifeSTEPS would like to thank those who help us fight food insecurity by providing food support to our residents across California. Thanks to the generosity of our partners and donors, LifeSTEPS provided nearly $1 million in food commodities to seniors, individuals and families in 2021. By reducing hunger and increasing access to nutritious food options, LifeSTEPS residents live healthier and more independent lives.

LifeSTEPS Applauds Introduction of “Healthier Home – Age in Place Nursing Program” Legislation

LifeSTEPS thanks Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian for including “Healthier Home – Age in Place Nursing Program” in his Aging and Long-Term Care Bill Package to advance California’s historic Master Plan for Aging.

The legislation, spearheaded by LifeSTEPS and USA Properties, is modeled after a pilot program designed to provide and link health care and social services in senior affordable housing communities. In addition to improving health outcomes, enabling older adults to age in place and saving lives, our partnership with CA’s healthcare systems saved an estimated $1.1 million annually in medical costs.

LifeSTEPS Asks Congress to Pass Full-Year HUD Budget

In a letter to Speaker Pelosi, Sen. Feinstein, Sen. Padilla and Rep. Bera, LifeSTEPS urged Congress to stop delaying and pass a full-year HUD budget as soon as possible. Congress has not yet approved Fiscal Year 2022 spending bills, which puts service coordination and affordable housing programs at risk of not having enough funds to maintain operations.

In the absence of an agreement on full-year spending for federal agencies and government programs, lawmakers have approved Continuing Resolutions (CR) to extend the deadline beyond the start of the fiscal year on Oct. 1, 2021. While CRs have prevented a government shutdown, they fund programs at last year’s levels, which can be detrimental to affordable housing programs that see rising year-over-year costs. The latest CR will expire on March 11.
