AMCAL Youth Scholarship Recipient Learns to Swim!

Three cheers for LifeSTEPS resident Caleb for graduating to the next swim level!  Thanks to our partner AMCAL’s commitment to building stronger families and communities through the Partnership for HOPE Fund, Caleb and other at-risk and low-income youth are able to participate in sports or activities that would be unavailable to them because of the cost. The youth development scholarship program helps youth learn skills and values such as responsibility, teamwork, dedication, and hard work in addition to enhancing physical development, social connection and mental and emotional well-being.

A Fond Farwell to Meredith Chillemi

After 19 years of dedicated service to LifeSTEPS, Meredith Chillemi, our Senior Director of Support and Health Services, announced her plan to accept a new position with the Helen Keller National Center. We want to thank Meredith for her friendship, guidance and mentorship. Meredith truly inspires those around her to be better, and her commitment to improving the quality of life for older adults has been an inspiration to the LifeSTEPS organization. Please join us in wishing Meredith all the best in the years to come and congratulating her on her new endeavor!

Family Health Care Resources Provides LifeSTEPS Residents with Food Donations

According to the AARP, more than 10 million adults age 50+ are at risk for hunger every day. This is why we’re so thankful for partners like Family Care Health Resources, who throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, have remained committed to preventing food insecurity by providing food donations to LifeSTEPS residents. Last week, Director of Social Services Naciely Hernandez distributed 50 bags of food to seniors in need at Sunrise Villas Apartments in South LA, developed by our partner AMCAL.

Helping older adults age in place

Supporting LifeSTEPS’ commitment to helping older adults age in place, nursing students from Samuel Merritt University recently held blood pressure clinics at Vintage Oaks and Sierra Sunrise, two affordable housing communities developed by our partner USA Properties. The nurses screened LifeSTEPS residents for high blood pressure and distributed blank tracking charts to bring to their primary care physicians. Residents also received helpful educational materials on safe blood pressure ranges.
